Echoes: Geometry Wars Meets Asteroids

May 25, 2007

Echoes

I like Geometry Wars, nothing like a trippy visual experience while playing a game. But how many of you remember playing Asteroids at the arcade with the trackball? Unless you had that trackball it sucked until now.

Echoes is a free game that combines the trippy visuals of Geometry Wars with the gameplay of Asteroids on ecstasy. Fast, crazy, and with a pumping soundtrack, you are in for a great ride and it didn’t even cost you a cent. You can bet this will be some of my weekend play. I say some because the other kind I can’t mention here. Let’s just say it involves a banana, 2 matches, the cat, and a picture of Stalin.

It’s just an echo.

Nissan Dualis Stomping Through Your Town

May 24, 2007

Nissan Dualis

Macross/Robotech creator Shoji Kawamori has teamed up with Nissan to help advertise the new Dualis SUV that is debuting. He has created a mecha, a la Transformers, that is a Dualis but humanoid in form.

Kawamori is a god when it comes to mecha design, essentially inventing and defining a lot of what is mecha and the structure behind it. Watch Macross Zero for an awesome glimpse of the Variable Fighters fully transforming and not in the stupid, magical way that most robots transform but instead in a very detailed, this piece slides here and that goes there kind of presentation.

Hit the jump to see two videos of the Dualis running around Japan.

Papercraft AT-AT

ATAT Papercraft

The AT-AT (All Terrain Armored Transport) is one of the coolest things to come out of the Star Wars universe. Imagine fighting a battle and then seeing those giants lumbering towards you. You would immediately know you are fucked.

The level of detail on this papercraft is really good. It almost looks like a model, which I did try and build when I was a little kid. I ended up sucking it so hard that I put it on the floor and stepped on it. Who sucks now, flattened AT-AT model?

“Echo station 3-T-8, we have spotted Imperial walkers. “

WoW: Dancing Fever Exposed

May 23, 2007

The main and possibly the only reason to ever play World of Warcraft is for the dancing emotes. If you are wondering what the hell I am talking about let me explain. In WoW, that’s what the hip nerds call it, you can “emote” people and your character will do things like wave, cry, and hug. The best one obviously is dance. Each race and gender has its own dance that are copies of some very famous ones.

I find it interesting to see where the Night Elf woman got her dance from, I initially guessed stripper not Eurotrash video. My personal favorite is the Bollywood inspired shenanigans. There is something about it that just makes me laugh so hard. Must be the turban.

Shiner ’98: The Legend Continues

May 23, 2007

Shiner Beer

Shiner is hands down the best American brewery that is not a macrobrew but is available to tons of people easily. Shiner is tied with Yuengling up north but they brew different types of beer so I don’t really compare them.

Yearly Shiner brings out their Bavarian Style Amber Lager yearly as an homage to their roots. It is handcrafted from two special varieties of hops and a blend of rich imported malts to make this the darkest lager possible. They count up yearly so this is Shiner ’98 and unfortunately is limited to a seasonal run. Otherwise I would bathe in the stuff.

Nothing finer than a Shiner.

Food Stamp Challenge Is BS Reply

May 22, 2007

Food Stamps

I sent the story posted earlier and received a reply from Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky’s Political Director, Alexander Armour. I will say this from the start, your timely response represents you in the best of light and I appreciate it.

Here is the email I received:

Dear MaoChan,

Thanks for taking an interest in the Food Stamp Challenge. I appreciate your thoughtful commentary as well. One of the big ideas behind the Food Stamp Challenge was to do some good old fashioned consciousness raising on the issue, and this has been a big success. Sometimes for people to really get the issue, you need to go beyond just talking about an issue, and doing something that will bring the reality of the situation home to other Members of Congress. Hopefully those who are ultimately responsible for determining what these benefits are will now have a better sense of what it actually means to try provide healthy meals for those in need of food asssitance. In your commentary, you mention farmers markets, but right now, most farmers markets, at least the ones we are familiar with here in Chicago, don’t accept food stamps, putting another barrier up in terms of access to fresh fruits and vegetable. We’re going to work to try to change that.

Sincerely,
Alexander Armour
Political Director – Schakowsky for Congress

YTMND: Dragon Ball Engrish Soup Song

May 22, 2007

Hey Chowder

Engrish is nothing new, people have been laughing at it since the Meiji Restoration in 1868 when Japan reopened its doors to foreigners. But you would think over time they would learn that they need to proof-read or in this case, proof-hear, a song before using it as a theme song.

The Dragon Ball theme song is terrible. That was a compliment btw because if it were not for the garbled trash the singer spews out, we wouldn’t have been able to laugh today. I thank you Mr. Terrible At English While Signing With A Japanese Accent Guy.

Hey! Chowder!
